pH in Your CT Drinking Water

What is pH? In CT and world wide, pH is an indicator of the acid or alkaline condition of water. The pH scale ranges from 0-14; 7 indicates the theoretical neutral point. Water with a pH value less than 7 indicates acidity and tends to be corrosive, while water with a value greater than 7 indicates alkalinity and tends to affect the taste of the water. Acidity or low pH of drinking water is usually a result of natural geological conditions at the site, possibly compounded by acid rain. Testing for the pH of your CT well water is crucial for: Evaluating the potential for your household plumbing to be subject to corrosion. Evaluating the potential for your drinking water to contain leached metals such as copper, lead, iron, cadmium, and zinc from your well pump and plumbing systems. Determining the effects of proper home treatment on other drinking water contaminants. Depending on the pH level (how acidic or alkaline), pre-treatment may be needed to adjust the pH of your water to a more neutral range. Otherwise, home treatment systems may not work as designed. Home treatment methods to adjust pH include Neutralizing Filters and neutralizing solutions (soda ash). Turbidity & Cloudy Drinking Water in CT

There are many factors that may cause cloudy or turbid water in CT. Cloudy water can also be referred to as having high levels of turbidity. The most common causes of turbidity are organic matter, or colloidal solids that are too small and too fine to settle out properly. These suspended particles can cause problems with disinfection processes, and also be an indicator of bacterial activity in the water. Turbidity is measured in NTU’s, (nephelometric turbidity units). The turbidity of Connecticut drinking water should always be less than 1 NTU. Most treated city water is less than .2 NTUs. While it is possible to filter water containing colloidal particles, and/or water that has a color to it, generally filtration is the last step in a process of treating this type of water. To remove turbidity, often the first step is to inject a flocculant, or coagulant aid, which allows these microscopic suspended particles to lose their positive charge and “floc” together into larger clumps. This is easily done on small scale systems by using a metering pump and injecting 2 -5 ppm of “Cat-Floc” (one of the many types of flocculant aids used for this purpose) into the water as it flows into a holding tank or storage tank. The water is allowed to settle, and is then followed by filtration to remove any suspended floc. In some cases the water must be gently stirred or agitated in order for the floc to form. The most common causes are iron, manganese, tannins, organic matter, and/or colloidal solids that are too small and too fine to settle out properly. These suspended particles can cause problems with disinfection processes, and also be an indicator of bacterial activity in the water. Turbidity is measured in NTU’s, (nephelometric turbidity units). The turbidity of drinking water in Connecticut should be less than 1 NTU. Most treated city water is less than .2 NTU. If the color is from tannin’s or humic acids, then a self-cleaning automatic tannin filter might be applicable. These filters remove dissolved color by ion-exchange, using anion exchange media.  While these are called tannin filters, they are really ion-exchange units. Frequently we see shallow wells, or wells under the influence of surface run-off water, achieve high levels of tannin’s during heavy rainy periods. Tannin filters are often an relatively low-cost technology to use for this type of problem, if the actual cause of the problem (such as sealing off the well from the surface) cannot be achieved. Sometimes tannin’s are accompanied with iron or manganese. Water high in iron or manganese can sometimes be red, rust colored, brown, tan, black, or greenish in color. Chlorination, followed by a well designed iron filter can be very effective at removing tannin and these oxidized iron particles in Connecticut wells.
